About Us
Aberdeen Academy of Performing Arts is now a recognised Dance and Musical Theatre School by the Council of Dance Education and Training
From February 1st 2007 Aberdeen Academy of Performing Arts received Recognised School status by the CDET. This means that parents and guardians of students can be confident that their child will receive training in Dance and Musical Theatre in a safe environment and with Qualified and experienced teachers. Enhanced disclosures, teaching qualifications and experience of all the staff at the Academy have been checked and verified by the Council. The school also has the required insurance. The school has a handbook for all‚ new pupils on enrolment, with full‚ details‚ of all‚ our policies at the Academy. We are delighted to be awarded this status.

Academy Aims and Objectives
Aberdeen Academy of Performing Arts is dedicated to excellent training in‚ Dance, Drama and Singing. There are many benefits from a training in Performing Arts. A basic grounding in these disciplines will allow children to grow in confidence, develop communication skills and improve fitness. Every student is treated as an individual and students are encouraged to develop their skills at their own pace. Only experienced staff teach at the academy.
Staff
All staff members are CRB checked for suitability to work with children. A First aider is on the premises when all classes are running. As well as being a recognised Dance and Musical Theatre school by the Council for Dance Education and Training, we have taken part in the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD) vetting scheme, in which all teachers are certified that they are suitable to teach young children.
Rachel Young LLB (Hons.) A.B.A.T.D takes all dance classes. Rachel is the principal of the academy and is responsible for the running of the academy from enrolments to the organisation of exams and shows. Rachel graduated in 2005 from Aberdeen University in Law and at the same time qualified as a dance teacher with the British Association of Teachers of Dancing. Rachel takes all dance classes from Melody Movement with the 2-4 year olds (her favourite class of the week!) to adult Tap and Ballet, Modern-Jazz and Highland.
Stuart Mearns takes charge of the Drama classes and directs the end of year Musical Productions for the Musical Theatre classes. He has a wealth of experience in teaching all age ranges. Stuart has directed and been on stage in over 60 productions ranging from plays and musicals‚ to pantomimes. Stuart's teaching experience is vast, teaching drama for local groups such as Giz Giz and most recently Stagecoach Theatre Arts Aberdeen.
Structure of the Academy
The academy offers separate classes in Dance (Melody Movement, Tap, Ballet, Modern-Jazz and Highland) and Drama. Occasionally there are a few places for private singing lessons. The Academy also offers a very popular Musical Theatre Class where students have a 2½ hour class in Dance, Drama and Singing, with a production at the end of the year. Students can participate in as many classes as they wish. We encourage all Musical Theatre students to participate in an extra dance class at a reduced fee. Each teacher is in charge of the classes that are run at the Academy in their area of expertise. Areas studied in each class are appropriate for each age group and varied throughout the year. Teaching methods and styles used at the academy also vary with each age group and teacher. We offer students in the 4th term the opportunity to enter dance exams with the BATD and Musical Theatre exams with Trinity-Guildhall. These exams are optional and extra classes for the exams fit around Musical Theatre class times and are very minimal.
Performance
Each student will be given as many opportunities as possible to perform to their family, friends and the wider public. At the end of the term family and friends may be invited to watch classes. All students are involved in our annual Christmas production which gets bigger each year!
