Musical Theatre

Our musical theatre classes are 2 ½ hrs long and involve a lesson in Singing, Jazz/Street/Theatre Dance and Acting. Through the second half of the year all classes work on pieces or a musical theatre production which is internally auditioned for, rehearsed and prepared for public performance.

Throughout the year children are given the opportunity to prepare for an individual or paired Trinity College London Musical Theatre exam.

Our Musical Theatre Classes are structured in the following way:

• Primary 1-3 : Beginner's Musical Theatre
• Primary 4-7 : Foundation Musical Theatre
• Secondary 1-3: Intermediate Musical Theatre

Our students from secondary 3 upwards are then encouraged to audition for our NPA Musical Theatre Course (SCQF level 6 – the same level as a Higher sat at school). All students who are successful in gaining a place on the course in secondary 4 will go into year 1 of the 2 year course and complete the course at the end of the 2nd year.

Aberdeen Academy of Performing Arts are also delighted to be joining forces with Harlequin Productions to offer young people between the ages of 17 years old (6th year at school) and 23 years old the chance to take part in a new Musical Theatre company : ' Harlequin Student Productions'.

This new company will aim to follow in the footsteps of Harlequin Production's current adult theatre company by bringing fresh, new and different musical theatre shows to the stage. Harlequin Productions are known for creating gritty theatre which favours nuanced, honest, simple and effective entertainment.

The company will begin auditioning for members in May 2012 and will begin its first year at the end of August 2012. Company members alongside rehearsing for their show or when not rehearsing for a show will be able to continue their Musical theatre studies by taking part in Advanced Level Trinity College exam and work towards the SQA Accredited NPA Musical Theatre course through Harlequin's link with Aberdeen Academy of Performing Arts.
